MARIJUANA CAUSES HARM

During a congressional hearing, Tennessee Representative Steven Cohan tore into the Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy head of the War on Drugs, Michael Botticelli on Tuesday. His attack was vicious. The major thrust of his tirade was that smoking marijuana is not a problem but heroin and cocaine are. Marijuana does not cause cirrhosis of the liver, which makes alcohol bad, heroin is addictive so it bad but pot does not do these things so that makes it good. No one is addicted to marijuana or die from smoking marijuana. The war on drugs is a failure, he declared. To me this is an example of disjointed logic. Was he saying we should stop trying to prevent the use and importation of all drugs? Was he advocating the legalization of all drugs?

We must try to debunk the myth that marijuana does no harm; it does harm. Smoking marijuana does impair judgment; that is why Obama so clearly stated, “to inhale is the whole idea”. If you evaluate the judgment of people without marijuana and people after smoking marijuana, what would you expect; that after smoking marijuana their judgment on average would be better? Ridiculous! Cannabis alters the mind; that is why people smoke it and cancer patients use it. It does not make you a better driver as I have been told by a pot head. I would like to ask Steve Cohan if a pot smoking train operator runs into the back end of the train in front of him a kills three or four people if those people died from marijuana. If he also dies in the accident, did marijuana do him any harm? If the operator were drunk there, would be no debate—zero; alcohol kills people.
