This morning on Morning Joe (MSNBC) Joe came through with a
classic Republican comment. He was referencing an incident of highway rage involving
a motorcycle gang and a motorist. As most people know, a bunch of people out
enjoying a ride on nice day on their “bikes” is not a motorcycle gang, a bunch
of troublemakers like the infamous Hells Angles. The fact that they become involved
in a road rage incident was especially surprising because it involved a group
acting in concert. We, at least I, usually think of road rage as involving a
single person offended by some driving impropriety involve another motorist. This
was different. A man with his wife and child in his car bumped or scraped one
of the motorcyclists or the other way around. He called 911, and they answered;
therefore, police new about what was happening. The “gang” surrounded his car
and stopped in front of him. In a panic, he drove over one of the motorcyclist.
He eventually became trapped in traffic.
They dragged him from his car and beat him severely. All of this took time. Joe’s
comment was, “Where were the police?”
Police cost money. Small government Joe Scarborough, like
most small government Republicans, does not want to pay taxes but the first
thing that comes to their minds when something goes wrong is were are the public
services; where are the police when you need them? Where are the firefighters? Where
are the teachers? I call these people pothole republicans. Many years ago,
there was a news story about the conditions of the highways in Wyoming, a
predominantly Republican state. They do not want speed limits because it
impinges on their freedom, which means they do not receive Federal money to
support their highway system. The
complaint made in the story was there are so many potholes they could hardly drive
on the roadways. Somehow, I see justice in all of that. I do not see justice in
what happened on Henry Hudson Parkway in New York.
