ROMNEY NOT PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL

If there is one thing that made clear by the primary and election campaign, it is that Romney is just not presidential material. I judge the man based on his responses to questions and how he handles himself in different situations. It is clear how he succeeded in business and how he would fail as president. His focus is very narrow and he is the center of it—everything he does is for his own personal good. A president has to have a broad understanding of the world and, by definition, have concern for the common good. This assessment is based on him personally and not an assessment of his political philosophy. Of course, I abhor his politics of individualism. I rejected John McCain based on his politics but I am rejecting Mitt Romney based on both his personality and his politics.

He changes his position faster than a chameleon changes colors. He wants the person he is talking to like him and thinks the way to achieve that aim is to agree with them. It works well if you are a businessperson trying to sell something, but presents a problem when talking to a women’s group in the morning then to a bunch of evangelical ministers in the afternoon. In either case, it is like trying to sell raw meat to vegetarians.  It calls into question his relationship to his church. How can a vulture capitalist, who goes to church every week and church leaders tell him to “do on to others as you would have them do onto you,” not heed what he hears? To address him directly about his donations to that church; Mitt, no amount of philanthropy will excuse the way you earned the money you donate. You cannot buy your way into heaven nor can you buy your way into the white house—at least I hope you can’t.

  1. Agreed, But he and the other Republicans will still try. The party needs to take less extreme and engage in more compromise...alas

  2. A Republican compromise is to ask for 100%. The Democrat compromise to 50%. The Republican again ask for 100%. The Democrats compromise to 75%. There is a great word 'iteration'. When the Democrats object to compromise they are the obstructionist or have you never heard the expression "Democrats will not work across the aisle" even at 87.5%. A Grover Norquist compromise is a Hobsons choice.
