President Obama gave a great speech before the United Nations. He outlined a program aimed at ensuring world peace. The centerpiece of his program is shedding the idea ancient of “might is right”. Replacing muscle power with brain power is so easy to understand but is so hard to accomplish. Not only that, this slowly evolving change is the centerpiece of our humanization as has not only been pointed out by intellectuals such as Stephen Pinker and Michael Shermer but they cite reams of data in support of this contention. The sad thing about it is we can find this point of view in our politics. Fortunately, our political parties centered their beliefs more on greed verse altruism than on might is right. Nevertheless, power for the sake of power still looms large. As a simple yet illuminating exercise, imagine Putin and Obama fighting in a mixed martial arts ring. There are those who would think that it really matters who would win. I see people such as John McCain who thinks it is a shame that Obama would get his butt kicked. Putin certainly has published photos of himself in macho poses, such as lifting weights, or bareback on a horse. Isn’t this a reflection of what I am talking about. I look forward to the outcome of the meeting of President Obama and Prime Minister Putin later today. I know Obama is the intellectual giant and will win. URL: Comments Invited and not moderated
