COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM
Something I heard at the Republican debate, where all ten candidates agreed on everything, surprised me. Every one of them expressed compassion in some form or another. At some stage, the rich have to take care of the poor and unfortunate. In the past, I have treated compassionate conservatism as an oxymoron. After many years, I think I understand their compassion. Elect them to an office and they will adjust the economy so they are all earning enough money. They will institute a severe austerity program by cutting all social services, eliminate public educations, cut health care, destroy unions, etc. and pay down the nation’s debt to zero, they can do this by cutting taxes on the rich to zero because cutting taxes creates jobs; it hasn’t yet but someday it will. They call it trickle-down economics or Reaganomics. Once they are satisfied they are earning enough, then and only then will they show their generous nature by turning to helping the poor, pensions, health care, etc. Of course, the missing element it that there is no such thing as a Republican who feels satisfied he is earning enough? Did you notice I did not say, he or she, only he. It’s man’s world out there.
