REPUBLICAN NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
I see the massive movement of “hate the government” propelled by individualism expanding and rapidly growing in intensity. The new Congress, with strong Republican majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate scares me in this regard. I feel that people voted for Republicans, who espouse polices are clearly counter to their own interests—the, “what is the matter with Kansas”, concept. Perhaps, it is innate individualism and not logic driving their vote. I think we can consider this as a failure of our system of education.
I see individualism raise its ugly head in many different forms and unfortunate ways. It is a manifestation of greed, which is our most deeply held innate trait. Of course, we know that greed is good; we could not survive without it. We also know that greed can be harmful; others die because of our greed for material goods and lust for power. The innate nature of greed is evident daily on the streets and in the classrooms; many people are overweight. We know everyone has greed for great amounts of money but only a few succeed in achieving that goal. In the balance, greed is bad which is why it is a pejorative to refer to someone as being greedy.
We see the lust for power in the same light. We hate it when someone is there to tell us what to do and when to do it. We categorize people into classes; those who we think can tell us what to do; perhaps an employer, a wife, or someone clearly a moral authority (priest) or even someone physically superior (Hulk Hogan). We also class those who we think do not have that authority such as our children, or neighbor, and recently, police officers. The question relates to what we base this judgment on. What is there about government in the minds of some that generates so much hate while other willingly accepts government authority?
Part of our humanization is that some of us have “learned” to shed some bestial instincts while others have not or have learned only to modify such instincts. Natural history tells us that as beasts we had to fight to satisfy our greed, which is how we survived. The best and strongest fighter was the survivor. I think gun ownership falls in that category; the guy with the gun is the strongest. We have learned to substitute money for material goods as a practical matter; a person with 100,000 million potatoes has a problem finding a bank. This brings us to government authority or social order. A peck order is an innate trait; therefore is bestial. The problem is that some of us seem to be having trouble learning government is necessary, which is why I refer to “hate for government, as an educational failure.
The tragedy is that one political party has successfully nurtured this ignorance. A select few maneuvered themselves in to the “top chicken” position using the bestial innate “hate the authority” propensity of voters. We need the government to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves—everyone knows that. If you think the economy can function without government you are badly mistaken. If you with your big gun chose to call this a nanny state, so be it. You should be prepared to realize what the world with 7 billion “individuals” would be like. Chaos is no joke. To see the outcome of what they are asking for all individualists should be made to sit down and watch the entire movie, The Road (2009), written by Sean Pollock. It is too real; it was rated “R” but should have been rated a “XXX”, it was social pornography. When you realize what you have done by electing a Republican controlled Congress with the idea that they would drown government in the bathtub, they were lying. It is clear that what they want in their hands is the power of the government they taught you to hate. You gave it to them. They now want to use that power to tell you what to do; so much for your individualism. They put you and your business on “The Road” to face no regulations on financial institutions and corporations, pricing by monopolies, white collar crime, media control by one person, old age poverty, health care for the rich, minimum wage jobs, polluting your environment and any thing else that will make them a buck all because you think you need a gun to protect yourself from 7 billion people. I am here to tell you, there are many more things only the government can do for you and you business than you have allowed yourself to be led to believe. The biggest joke is on the small business entrepreneur; you voted to shoot yourself in the foot; good luck with that! I am sorry that no one told you that Teddy Roosevelt is dead.
