SOMETHING ONLY THE PRESIDENT KNOWS

The President’s news conference yesterday was interesting but the reaction to that conference was even more interesting. I have been around intellectuals all my life and interpreted what I heard differently from what I am hearing on TV talk saws. The media has a strong right wing bias that colors everything they say. Aside from that, we have to “read through” all the hate Obama strategy the Republican Party used to “win” the election just as we had to “read through” all the hate Nancy Pelosi rhetoric of the past election—it works to pick someone to vilify and focus all attacks on that one person. It is the personification of a political party. Although most people despise Karl Rove’s campaign tactics like this that has poisoned the political atmosphere, they work. Once shed of the cheap politics, what did the President say?

The president seemed mute and constrained as if he knew something the media did not know. The President said he was disappointed. Everyone expected him to say this: however, what he was visibly disappointed in was that the electorate did not see—and appreciate—the tremendous gains this country has made under his leadership. Although he cannot understand how the people seem not to understand what is so obvious to him, which is that he has had a terrible successful administration. He was successful even if the candidates were not; he did not nor should he accept the blame for the defeat that rests on the backs of the candidates. The advances in healthcare are obvious and he should not have to defend what is so obvious. The country is making a tremendous recovered from a disastrous recession. Industries are creating jobs at a steady rate and have been doing so for many, many, months. The program for renewable clean energy is in place and growing at a rapid and steady rate in spite of huge moneyed interest that have a counter view. His policies have saved the banking and auto industry. We, as a nation, are producing more energy than ever before. He not only managed to protect the environment but also advanced envonmental protection while doing so. Advances in the social agenda are equally as great as they are in the economic sphere. In addition, on the world-stage, he not only avoided war with Russia but also, in the name of peace, took on and defeated the greedy business interests of Germany, France, and Great Britain in doing so. Above all else, he took on Exon and won; they are not going to drill the Russian arctic. No other American president had to do that. He was able to convince Syria, a Russia ally, to destroy all of its poison gas with out having to bomb, bomb. Iran has stopped building an atomic bomb and will sign a treaty to that effect on Nov. 24. Stunning victory after stunning victory has been his with little or not fanfare. As Walter Brenan used to say, “No brag, just fact.”

Although Democratic candidates lost election after election, the President appreciated the fact that this election advanced his liberal Democratic agenda. This sounds like double talk until you look at the results on liberal issues that made it on to ballots; for example, every place minimum wage was on the ballot, it passes. I think he realized most of the candidates who lost, lost because they did not champion his Democratic victories. The Republican Party machinery convinced the people and the Democratic Party candidates to turn their backs on their own President and his accomplishments and instead, blame him for the mal function in Washington caused by the failings of the Republican controlled House of Representatives; as consequence; they had empty campaigns and lost. He knows the lawmakers would only pass legislation the people of the country did not want or pass legislation he would veto because the results would be inherently bad for working Americans. For example, rather then do what the people need, which is to promote renewable energy, big money interests wanted legislation to approve the Keystone pipeline, which is designed to move Canadian tar-sands oil across the United States to be refined in Texas and then shipped over to China leaving all the air pollution in our country. The oil industry lobbyists have distorted the rhetoric about the associated job creation rhetoric and once the pipeline is built, even those few jobs will disappear in to thin air; everyone knows that. In China, these products would be used and contribute to world pollution; people know that as well.  

The Nov. 4th loss resulted from the Democratic Party turning their back on him we all lost—big time. Obama is too much of a man to gloat about this defeat not being his, just as he is too big of a man to brag about his own many accomplishments, only a few of which I listed at the start of this article. He essentially accomplishes all of this as a one-man government; a one ring circus with clown dancing about. After his first two years in office, the Congress either fought him or did nothing. The Supreme Court fought him, as well. Obama is an intellectual, which means he is smart enough to know not to try and invite the Republican leadership to the White House, which publically, loudly, and persistently swore to destroy his Presidency. Why would he want to drink with them or even to have a friendly chitchat? The media seems not to understand what Republicans mean when they say they will not compromise.

After the elections, things are different. Remember when Obama proposed to “negotiate” with foreign leaders. The Republican leaders rose up in horror. The only time Republicans will negotiate is if a settled pre-agreement has been reached before going in to the negotiation, one that favors them. Now, they think they only have to negotiate with their own party. They only time that could happen is if they have the presidency; now they have complete control of Washington, the corrupt Supreme Court and the Legislative branch but lack the big one in which the have a formidable foe. I sensed what the President knows but the news media does not is that he is confident he can face up to them and win. The people have to know that James Madison gave him a big weapon—the veto pen. Couple this with knowing he has the best interest of the working people in this country in his heart. Knowing that, I can sleep at night and I am sure, so can he.
