Democracy is in danger in this election not just in the United
States but the world. Common knowledge tells us that Republican believe in
democracy only as long as they are the winners. What is super important to
understand is, “What do they mean by the pronoun “they” and how do they intend
to achieve this end. If we look around the nation, as evidence of what they
mean, several underlying themes all related to the belief that they will “cheat
to defeat”.

For democracy to work
elections must be “fair” for everyone to vote; the truth is that Republicans cannot win in fair elections.
They themselves admit this by what they do to make elections unfair and do it so
pervasively. This is why we have massive
nation wide efforts at voter suppression; where you have Republican control you
have voter suppression. For Republicans, what it means to be fair is that only
Republican voters have the right to vote; this
is what voter suppression is all about. This is why we have massive right
wing spending for campaigns to elect “conservative” judges so they can control courts.
The courts that will make judgments based on political philosophy and not jurisprudence.
There are a growing number of examples where judges have supported this unfair,
unconstitutional voter suppression. This effort runs deep. In addition, we see several
secretaries of states and attorneys general in Republican controlled states making
obviously unfair decisions favoring Republican candidates. We cannot forget
that to flag waving, democracy (small “d” democracy) loving, patriotic Republicans,
fairness in elections means that voting counts as long as only Republicans can
vote; let’s call this “provision democracy”.
It looks like Republicans will be in charge of the congressional
branch of government. We all know that one of the hallmarks of that party is
that they will not compromise with democrats. What we might overlook is that it
is not only the Democrats they refuse to compromise with but also they refuse
to compromise with other Republican. This means that voters may reelect Mitch
McConnell to the Senate but we cannot assume that the senate will choose him as
their leader. The radical wing of the Tea Party, which its self is radical, will
gain power in this election and may prevent his reelection as their leader and
elect one of their own. Regardless, they will force the entire Senate to the right,
which has ominous overtones even for “normal”
Republicans; the entire agenda shifts from rational economic and social conservatism
to radicalism.
For example, of what this means consider what they mean by “they”,
when they say they want to take, “their government back.” To the radical
republicans, what this means is that only white, northern European ancestor, male,
property owners can vote. Immigrants can become citizens but “they” can never
become “Americans”. Put this in the context of elections. We had a recent dust
up over the Presidents birth certificate. The President is half-black; therefore,
he can never be a citizen any more than a Native American is a citizen. His
birth certificate says he was born in Hawaii, which by law and common sense
makes him and “American”. Repercussion to his election calls my attention to
one thing Republicans are doing to corrupt the electoral system. The people
elected him by a plurality meaning a majority of those voting wanted him to be
President. With this in mind and after the radical republican control of Congress,
I predict there will be a move to elect the President by precincts the same as
we elect our senators, taking the vote out of the hands of the people.
To understand why, consider the plethora of colored political
maps we see on every news program on TV. Invariable, there are great sweeps of
red on the map when the maps show precinct only but there are both red and blue
states on maps done by state. This election spells trouble for constitutional democracy;
they will use this power to take their country back, to change our country in a
fundamental way. The 2010 elections swept Republicans into power in a number of
States and we can predict how they will use this power. By what they have done
in the past at the state level
Of great significance was that 2010 was a census year. According
to the Constitution, we elect representatives to the House of Representatives by
districts of equal population; thus, sparsely populated areas are huge but have
equal representation as small densely populated areas. By gerrymandering voting
districts, Republican controlled state governments put the majority of
districts in those states into hands of Republican even when there are more
Democrats living in those states—in contrast, people elect two senators for
each state and the president by a plurality; a simple majority of vote without
regard to territory. The result was that the “all” Republican controlled states
sent “all” Republican representatives to Washington but, in stark contrast, often
sent Democratic Senators. In the end, gerrymandering gave them control of the
House of Representatives, which gave them the power to work their devilish
voter suppression magic. Political maps show blue spots indicating urban America,
in a sea of rural red. With voter suppression and gerrymandering, precinct election
of presidents would give Republicans unequivocally control of entire government.
Political maneuvering to create precinct elections is interference
in the way our country works politically. In addition, with total control,
there will be economic corruption as well; no regulations on business, not environmental
control, no department of education, which will put us on the road to becoming a
third world country like Honduras, Guatemala, or a Christian equivalent of Syria,
for example. The tragedy of 2014 will last for a long time.
