Steve Kornacki’s show “UP” (MSNBC) was interesting this morning
with the Secretaries of the national organizations of two major political parties
setting side by side. The Republican was true to form when, out of context, he awkwardly
inserted the claim that Congress passed the Affordable Care Act “in the dark of
night and behind closed doors”. This is such a blatant lie that even he should
realize that it is a lie; the whole world watched congressional committees
engage in debate after debate for over a year on prime time TV, then watched
them cast their votes followed by the entire congress voting. There was nothing
clandestine about it; it was what amounted to media saturation.

However, by saying what he said next, he set the tone of the
coming campaign strategy for Republican candidates. Kornacki, the host
displayed recent results of polls showing how unpopular both parties are with
the American public. Both parties are low but the Republican Party is clearly several
points worse than the Democratic Party is. With those results as background,
the RNCC secretary said Republican candidates were going to campaign on the
merits of individual candidates. I found this fascinating. What he was saying
is that they cannot tell the truth, which is the Republican Party acts as a
monolith in Washington an they will be part of that—look at the congressional voting
record; they vote in lock step; thus, they do not represent the people in their
districts; they represent the Republican Party. The sad truth is that Supreme Court
has made it so that the economic elite control the Republican Party, which is
now a virtual dictatorship.
What he s aid is that each Republican candidate will
campaign on his or her individual merit but once elected will abandon that
individuality and vote the way the Koch brothers tell them to vote. If the
American people were to vote for them based on how they “will vote”, the polls
clearly indicate that the American people would not elect them. The only way the American people will elect
them is for them to be deceitful and lie. The Republican Party does not stand
for one single thing the working American people want: affordable health care, stopping
voter suppression, increase minimum wage, legalize unions, equal opportunity, public
education, eliminating income disparity, solves the immigration crisis,
protection of the environment, tax the rich, among many, many other things. They
want to dazzle you into voting for a well-funded, well-dressed, good-looking Republican
preaching individual rights; if you fall for that trick you will regret it! Am
I worried? Yes, look at the number of people who believe that Congress passed
the ACA without debate and voted on in the dark of night.
