TAX AND SWITCH IN NORTH CAROLINA

There are several posts on-line with the message, “Get rid of income tax”. A normal person would think that by now everyone would know that is, to be overly kind, “stupid”. It relates to the rich shifting the tax burden to the poor. It seems trite to have to explain that by taxing income, if you earn lots of money, you pay a higher amount of taxes than if you are in a minimum wage job. Everyone knows that we have to pay taxes to sustain government; therefore, the message of the rich to the poor is that if you do not pay taxes, you do not have government, and they will step in and control your life in the interest of profits—this is different from “your government” controlling “your life” for “your well-being”. This is the shift from democracy to plutocracy so coveted by corporations. This is the Reagan dream of top down economics. This is income disparity.

If we all know, we need to pay taxes to have government; if we do not pay income taxes the alternative is sales tax. Again, it seems trite to have to explain, that a low wageworkers spends 100% of his earnings to live; a worker pays taxes on every penny he or she takes out of society. A rich person spends only a small fraction of his income even if he or she lives the most extravagant life style; therefore, a sales tax means the rich take more out of society and pays less tax.

How this works “on the street” is simple. Certain North Carolina politicians are claiming they lowered taxes in our state. What the Republican controlled state legislature did was lowered income taxes and raised sales taxes. As just explained, they shifted taxes from the rich and put them on the backs of the poor. They brag about increasing the number of jobs, when what they mean is that they lowered “all taxes” on “all industry”. By this, they claim to put more money into the hands of the job creators. What that really means is they increased corporate profits and put more tax free money in the posts of multimillionaires. I have news for you; that money came out of your pocket.

Some of us just stand back and scratch our heads, how can working people be so stupid. The question has three answers, (1) the rich rely on innate human greed to sell their position, which makes workers inherently willing to pay no taxes, (2) the rich understand that people, who are struggling to survive, are the ones who most want to pay no more taxes, and, (3) finally, the rich understand that people who shower when the come home form work rather than before they go, are more interested in sports, movies, or anything that can serves as a diversion. Politics pays no or a very little part in their lives. They kick back with a cold can of beer to relax; by the way the ads on TV tells them the beer in their hand is a good brand—over and over and over. If a billionaire pays for a half time ad that tells them Republicans cut taxes, why would they not believe it? They bought the beer because that is what they were told to do during the last game. By the way, they vote the way the billionaires told them to vote, for the same reason; why would they not agree with the ads; they do not want to pay more taxes; they are not stupid, they know that beer doesn’t grow on trees.
