The Supreme Courts Citizens United decision has clearly put
our democracy is in danger and here is why. The Koch brothers and not the American
people are choosing and financing candidates. This makes it super-important to
realize what they stand for. The media cannot gain an honest understanding by
interviewing them. This reflects the old adage, it is what they do ant not what
they say. As a foundation for understanding what they stand for we can go back
to David Koch’s family history and his platform when he was vice presidential candidate.

The Koch brothers grew up in the toxic political environment
created by their father, Fred Koch, the founder of the Koch Industries. This
man, their father, was a huge supporter of the John Birch Society; an organization
built solely on an intense hate for communism out of which grew the intense
hate for government of any kind. I think it is fair to bring into the conversation
the anti communist fight in Germany in the early1930s that resulted in fascism because
that was the era of the Birch Society founding. The intensity of hate of Fred
Koch and his John Birch Society for communism in America parallels that fight
in Germany, except that communism was never a viable alternative in this country
as it was in Germany and our democracy prevented fascism from winning. The economic
depression of the time was the driving force for the political unrest. Nevertheless,
the fight did drive Franklyn Delano Roosevelt politics that eventually led to
the New Deal, which became the focus of hate for them—then, and still is. The strength
of hate is hard to understand because David and Charles Koch’s father did not
have an immigrant background like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio (CUBA), and Ayn Rand (Russia)
who can claim horrible family histories that explains the intense overreach of their
feelings.
To give flavor to the “inherited” form of this hate we can
look at that 1980 presidential Clark-Koch race. They promised to abolish Social
Security and the Federal Reserve Board. They would eliminate Welfare, minimum-wage
laws, corporate taxes, and all price supports and subsidies for businesses and agriculture.
There would be a wholesale closing of U.S. Federal agencies including SEC, EPA,
ICC, FTC, OSHA, FBI, CIA, and DOE. By the way, voters reject them: they received only 1.06% of the vote. If you
care to compare their program with the politics of the candidates they hand
pick, you will see that what they believed in then is what the platform of the Tea
Party in 2014.
Newt Gingrich, back in 1994, did something evil to the ways
of our democracy that set the stage for what the Koch Brothers are doing today.
He used his substantial campaign contributions to select and finance candidates
in poor but conservative districts all across the Nation. They were usually poor
quality candidates that would not succeed without this help. In exchange for
being chosen and financed by him as a candidate, they had to be radically right
wing (in terms of the times) and most of all he demanded and got their loyalty.
By using money collected in rich district, corporation, and Wall Street etc,
and he was able to initiate the corruption of our the representation system of government. By
the way, Joe Scarborough (MSNBC) was one of them.
Another element to Koch brothers’ success was Karl Rove, a
less then honest political operative. He was a clever manipulator of elections:
he introduced the many questionable campaign tactics we are all familiar with
in the George W. Bush elections but Also the manipulation of government to
institute a “perpetual majority” by corrupting presidential appointments
especially judicial appointment. He violated the law but was never prosecuted,
as he should have been.
Rove was the initiator of primary challenges using the
techniques of Newt Gingrich but now well financed by billion of corporate
dollars made available by the Citizen United Decision. Under Rove’s direction, Primary
challengers have been turned into a form of gangland style protection; either
you vote the way Koch brothers tell you to vote or we will find and finance a
candidate to “run you out of office” in low turnout election where large
amounts of money “ totally and unequivocally” dominate the race—to be
challenged is to lose your seat in congress. The Koch brothers, in the few
short years since Citizens United, have now dominated the congress of the United
States.
Let me summarize! The
people no longer selected candidates; Koch brothers do. We no longer have a
democracy; we have a plutocracy or oligarchy. Under their system, elected
representatives no longer represent the people; therefore, the 1.06% who voted
for David Koch in 1980 is in charge. Those that succumbed to the threats of
challenges primary challenges vote the way Koch brothers tell them to vote. Those
loyal to the Koch brothers, those few honest politicians elected in solid Blue
district, are rendered impotent because they are outnumbered. By the way, if
you have any questions about where the country is going, I will tell you: abolish
Social Security and the Federal Reserve Board, eliminate welfare, minimum-wage
laws, corporate taxes, and all price supports and subsidies for businesses and agriculture.
Close all U.S. Federal agencies including SEC, EPA, ICC, FTC, OSHA, FBI, CIA,
and DOE. If the money is not yet at the top, it soon will be. Welcome to the
third world slums.
