It amazes me
that one after another at CPAC speakers, once at the podium, spouts the same
thing: “They want to take America back?” They try to out-do one another with
there own slightly different brand of conservatism. Rick Perry, Governor of Texas,
was forceful when he said he wants to reduce government to the army and the
post office—someone should remind him that he is out of step with Republicans
in congress, who are trying to close the post office. “Get the government out
of the business of education”, he screamed. “Get the government out of the
business of the business of health care”, he ranted. Try to square what they
are saying with their “take back America”, comment. What they are saying makes
no sense in a democracy; just who is it that wants to take America back and
from whom?

I think the
answer to those questions came from their hero Ronald Reagan in 1983; they want
to take “it”, meaning they do not want to destroy the government, but they do want
to take the power of government from the American people and give it to
themselves. The enigma; they want a strong government if they are in control
and no government if Democrats are in control. I have news for them; as the
sign proclaimed above George W. Bush after he was play acting as a fighter pilot
said on the decks of an aircraft carrier; “Mission Accomplished”. He is the guy
who used the government to fight a war the people did not want.
Republicans
have decimated our tax structure by collecting taxes from the working class and
directing it to corporations—corporate welfare. They already have taken themselves
of out of the business of public schools. What evidence do I to say this; this
morning the comment was made on TV that 50%
of our public schools are in disrepair or need updates. What does that say
about government support of school? Look
at that in light of the number of Republicans who signed Grover Norquist’s “no more
tax” pledge and the number of Republican votes to give subsidies to oil
companies and corporate farms—cut taxes but spend more. In respect to getting
the government out of heath care; our health care system under free enterprise,
which is with no government involvement, was a disaster; it was not working, which
is why we had to have Obamacare to save the system.
Citizen’s
United has already given them complete control of electoral politics; on issue
after that had overwhelming popular support, congress voted the opposite way. The
reason congress vote against the interest of the people they are supposed to represent
is because of Koch brother control of the electoral system and corporate
control of government. Look at the sacred cow, Social Security; they do not publically
mention that they want to destroy Social Security, get the government out of
the pension business but that they are succeeding one little step at a time;
try to live in America on Social Security income alone.
Mentioning Social
Security reminded me of another underlying theme at CPAC. Speaker after speaker
is saying they want the American people to vote for them and the way to
accomplish that goal they say is to stick by “conservative” principles, which they
know the people do not want. Thus, they are telling one another not to tell that
truth to the people because if they do they will not be elected; they are saying
the people are like children who don’t know what is good for them. The people want
minimum wage, affordable health care and public education; the people want environmental
protection and regulation of enterprises and financial institution. The people
want OSHA, Planned Parenthood, and access to abortion, and on and on. The people
want more and more government, which violates everything every one of the speakers
at CPAC are saying are “conservative principles”. They are telling each other
they must teach the people to vote against their own interest, but in case they
don’t, they have to justify what they have done, which is to take the power
they crave by other means; corrupt the government by lobbying and corrupting
the electoral system through Citizens United.
