Talking heads on TV seemed shocked, almost treating it like
breaking news, when they excitedly reported that statistics revealed that 113th
congress has only passed 36 laws compared to the 112th congress that
passed 283 laws. They tie this to poll results that revealed Congress approval
at 9%. A little closer look tells a different story.

The majority of the country likes to believe that congress
should be passing laws—passing laws means our representatives are governing. If
they pass “good” laws, the people benefit. I would call the attention of the
public to the idea that the political party in control of the House of Representatives,
the Republican Party, wants congress to
do nothing. If I tell you, someone said that big government is bad, do you
think I am talking about a Democrat or a Republican. If I tell you that a
person said they hate government, am I talking bout a Republican or a Democrat.
The Republican Party, the party of Grover Norquist, has as its agenda to destroy
what they call “big government”; small government would pass very few laws.
The point is that TV talking heads should not be shocked
that only 36 laws were passed. After all, the objective of the political party
in charge is to eliminate the government; drown it in a bathtub. A careful examination
of the laws they did pass would reveal another thing; those laws they pass deal
with making government smaller; cutting taxes, undercutting federal power in
favor of states power, curtailing regulation of business, increasing military spending,
government deregulation, and advancing individualism such a gun ownership. Another
area received their special attention are laws curtailing presidential power,
which entails such things as shifting State Department Power to the Pentagon.
They have passed laws and busied themselves with tasks aimed at harming government
function such as defunding government agencies or failing to confirm presidential
appointees including federal judgeships. Part of their “advice and consent” mischief
is to increase the number of presidential appointment that congress has to
approve; thus, digging deeper and deeper into the political party control of
the civil service appointment process—an old Karl Rove perpetual majority tactic.
The declared purpose of the political party in charge of the
House of Representatives is to make the president fail. President Barack Obama has proved that he is a great president by virtual
of the fact that in spite of their best efforts to destroy him he has succeeded
in doing many good thing for the county and in the world. There has been a
sea change in both domestic and foreign policy. The Middle East, including both
Israeli sovereignty and Arab Spring, is settling down and affordable heath care
is settling in. The economy is recovering in spite of Republican refusal to pass
an economic stimulus and raise taxes—a combination that would accelerate the
recovery. Ion the world, the United States chest bumping has come to a standstill
with the United Nations meaning the United States is joining the family of
nations by stopping its “bomb, bomb, bomb” nonsense of McCain and conservative
demand for building an economic empire mocking the Ronald Reagan years followed
by neo-cons military industrial complex wars. If you do not believe this,
compare any six months of headlines during the Bush Administration with any six
month of current headlines.
