There is a hidden danger for Democrats in Washington D.C.
politics. Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee have skewed the political curve so
badly that we are losing sight of what it means to be a middle of the road
conservative. Senator +Paul Ryan, congressional representatives +Eric Kantor
and +Ron Johnson, and Governors +Walker, +McCrory, +Snyder, and +Scott are looking
as if they are reasonable conservatives—they are not. They stand as classic
examples of +Ayn Rand disciples. In their minds, the working person does not
count. It is OK to suppress voting, gerrymandering is acceptable, we should
accept racism, inequality for women, and poverty is an unpleasant fact we can
live with.
Do you realize that not long ago both conservatives and
liberals considered Ayn Rand’s philosophy as radial? Now it is “center” in the
Republican Party. The John Birch Society was an extreme organization and now it
is the money and sons of the founder, Fred Koch, that is driving Republican politics.
The point is, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee may go down but the toxic residue they
leaving in our nation’s capital can be devastating to our democracy. We need a
balance between conservatives and liberals not the decadent politics of Ayn
Rand type Conservatives in the bodies of Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor.
