DRIVING IN BELIZE

The Belize government and tourist industry are working hard to increase tourism but they are also working hard to turn Belize a retirement haven for Americans and Canadians. There are a number of articles and web sites filled with information about the country. However, there is one small but easily fixed negative to their scheme that is never mentioned in any of these articles. The people they are targeting are retired. People over 80 years of age cannot have a driver’s license in the country of Belize. At first blush, each of these two things makes intuitive sense but standing side by side they do not. Everyone knows the older a person gets the more apt that person is to have vision problems, and to react to crises more slowly. They also know that people who retire are getting old. Therefore, they should accept that some government imposed age restrictions on driving is required. However, the solution is not to issue a blanket decree based on age alone as the Government did; the solution is to require driving tests for everyone before receiving a license to drive
