President Obama decided to turn the punishment strike
against Basher al Assad over to the Representatives of the American People—the
people’s house. This begs the question, “Do
the Representatives in the House of Representatives, represent the American
people?” This may seem to be the height of cynicism in a democracy; however,
when I looked at the recent failure of gun control legislation in face of the
80 to 90% favorability ratings of public opinion polls and similarly the
failure by an overwhelming majority of that body to halt taxpayer subsidies to
the most profitable companies in American history. When we see the popular vote
in several states, electing Democrats yet Republican representatives out-number
Democrats in the House of Representatives. For example, North Carolina is 51%
democrat but our Representatives are 70 Republicans—something the Republicans should
be ashamed of but they are not, they seem proud that their trickery worked. The
question is answered, they do not represent the America People they represent
business interests—money. Shamefully, in North Carolina they represent one
person, millionaire Art Pope.
So what does this mean for Obama and his desire to punish
President al Assad? When Bush #2 invaded Iraq, it was a business venture; venture
capitalism using taxpayer’s money. It was a Halliburton and its Enron like
subsidiary, Kellogg-Brown & Root, who benefited. It was Vice president
Cheney, perhaps the most dishonest vice president ever, who profited mightily. The
media caught him at it but unlike Agnew, Cheney used to the power of his office
to cover his misdeeds and did not resign. The reason the Iraq war poisoned the well of public opinion is obvious. Nonetheless,
will the members of the House of Preventatives vote to support Obama? If they
do not, it will because the money people do not see enough profit in it to
overcome their hate of having a Democrat in the White House.
The objective in Syria is different from Iraq. Obama’s worldview
is different. The proposed attack against Syrian government is not to enrich
Halliburton and KBR or to enrich the vice president. It is punishment to prevent the Syrian military
from gassing people again. They did it before and we did nothing, then they did
it again and we did nothing. As a
bleeding heart liberal, I hate supporting actions that might kill people but I
can think of no other way of stopping the gassings. In my mind, Obama sees
things the same way as me. A day or two of missile firings and that is the end
of it—no desire to take over their country, “rape and pillage” their oil,
businesses, and send in a wave of Christian missionaries as was planned for
Iraq where oil is a big deal but in Syria, it is not. This time I hope the House
of Representatives will support Obama but when you have people who swear their
primary objective in governing is to hurt Obama, I wonder. When you have people
in Congress driven by hate for Muslims, it makes me question the validity of
their voting motives. When a minority party of the electorate represents a
majority in that body, it makes me question their judgment. Most confusing is that
we have progressives in the House of Representatives who are fighting a truly progressive
foreign policy they don’t yet understand—they just hate violence. I can
understand that.
If the people on the +Steve Kornacki’s show “UP” +(MSNBC)
this morning are representative of the America public opinion, Obama will win. We
will punish al Assad for his acts of inhumanity. However, the irony is that the
Kornacki guests seem to support Obama but don’t understand that what the Obama Administration
is doing is changing the basis of American foreign policy that has been in palace
for centuries; we are not going to overthrew a government just for business
gain, that is for profit. It will not be a first; Clinton did it in Kosovo
(1994,) and Bosnia (1999).
