The public position of Vladimir Putin,
president of Russia, in respect to Syria is confusing. The Kremlin denies claims
that it has a special relationship with the al Assad government but the
evidence unequivocally suggests Putin is supplying arms to Syria. The influence
of Muslims in Russia is significance (14% of population) but they seem more concerned
with their standing with the government that with helping the Syrian regime or
concern about the “Arab Spring”. The Russian government considers, or at least judging
from the fact they are outlawed in Russia, consider the Muslim Brotherhood a
terrorist organization while at the same time they also claim to have allied themselves
with foreign branches of that organization. In addition, the claim that their
naval base is justification for their defense of Syria seems false when the Deputy
Russian Foreign Minister confirmed that the small naval station at Tartus,
Syria as been evacuated. They claim they do not have one single person
stationed in Syria.

All of this begs the question, what is Vladimir
Putin doing? What game is he playing. The
only logical idea I can come up with is that the fellow with the mentality of a
St. Petersburg street punk and KGB training is that he wants a fight. As often
happens in bar rooms, arguments fueled by a little liquor develop; the smallest
guy in the crowd will pick on the biggest guy in the crowd to show how tough he
is. The message to Putin is simple; grow up! You are on the world’s stage acting
like a clown to draw attention too your self, standing up to President Obama
can only be for domestic political consumption. Obama is stronger, smarter, and more sophisticated than you
are. The danger is that he has the Russian arsenal at his disposal; it would be
like giving a punk the right to carry firearms into bars in Texas or making the
U.S. Arsenal available to John McCain or Ted Cruz.
