Bob Goodlatte, (R-Va) is a classic example of misuse of chairmanship
power in the House of Representatives. As chairman of the House of Representatives
Judicial Committee, he has killed the immigration reform bill—one legislator from
an isolated district with a gavel bigger that he is. He is applying the “Hastert
Rule” in his committee, "only republican votes count". I have to admit that I am not even sure that he has a majority of the Republican Party votes in his
committee; he may be acting as an individual, which would not surprise me.
His sorry excuse for blocking the bill is that it immigration
should be handled one step at a time. The truth of the matter is that he is against
immigration from south of our boarder. Just for fun, it would be interesting if
an amendment were added to that bill saying only Europeans could immigrate to
the Untied States, I wonder if he would block that too.
