NEGROS AS CHATTEL

Melissa Harris Perry reports this morning (MSNBC) that she was shaking with rage when she heard the Supreme Court ruling as it deals with civil rights. Melissa, my friend, that is exactly the reaction the Supreme Court of the United States wanted from you and all other black people; the same reaction a slave owner wanted when he shows up in the door of the slave quarters with a whip to drive workers into the field to pick cotton, perhaps, all except the pretty one he wanted to sleep with. Wake up America, a certain wing of the right wing of the Republican Party wants power over our lives.

Like the so-called Moral Monday protests in North Carolina. Gov. Pat McCrory had his secretary tell a protest group of teachers and children he was in a meeting. Then he arranged to be photographed playing a game of catch with someone on the other side of the capital building. The message is clear, he does not care if you protest or not; you elected him and he holds the whip. Stop and realize that the message being sent is mainly to his followers: the national Republican Party, the big donors, which count because of another Supreme Court decision called Citizens United.

He is not afraid of the voters because he has the power to prevent them from voting. In a democracy, if you cannot vote or if your vote does not count, you do not count, you are property. Which brings us right back to the slave quarters; McCrory has the power to do with you, as he wants to do with you. What they are doing in North Carolina makes me ashamed to be an American. Remember Jeremiah Wright, the black preacher in the Chicago church Obama attended, he used the expression ‘God Damn America’ for the way Americans had treated slaves and were continuing to treat black people. The right wing Republicans condemned him; they acted as if he should have asked God to thank America for the way they treated people of color. I refuse to join those among us—Republicans—who think people of color are property, mere chattel. The same people who will search the internet for the word 'negro' before they will search for colored people (www//GoogleTrends) .

Are you sorry yet that you voted Republican?
