You
should know about what Republican call good news. The Associated Press reports (July
9, 2013) that General Electric “is getting a rich incentives package to add 240
jobs” for North Carolina workers. The company will get $5 million in state tax
breaks “if the company meets hiring and investment targets”. Counties and city
governments offered up another $22 million in “land, cash, and tax breaks”. That
is $27 million in taxpayers’ dollars in return for 240 jobs, which is $112,500
per job. Gov. McCrory calls this great news . . . really. The average salary at GE factory is about $48,000. It is important to
note that in North Carolina, essentially there is no pension plans or health
care plans folded into employee wage structure, which means that this state is
a low wage state. The company is making a profit of $64,500 per job ($112,500 -
$48,000). That $64,000 difference represents taxpayer money and capital.
The
story does not stop there. Every state in the union is competing for these
jobs. According to the invisible hand of Adam Smith, the state that offers the best
deal for big business gets the action. What this means is that big business has
found a way of funneling your tax dollars and assets into the hands of company executives.
The company executives give themselves big salaries, bonuses, and donate to the
politicians who set up and maintain the system. In other words, company
executives are using your money and expending your capital to increase their
profits.
Every
Republican controlled state and even some democratic controlled states are
competing to give away your tax dollars. This is the classic tailspin and we
all know how tailspins end. There seems to be no way to stop Republican greed
short of teaching our children what is happening—oops, sorry, we can not do that Republicans control the
school district. Don’t give up; at least
we can vote them out of office—oops, sorry they gerrymander legislative districts
and suppress workers votes. Life is good, what “you all” can do is set back,
relax, and enjoy the air show; fiery crashes are always fascinating—oops,
sorry, you don’t earn enough money to afford the ticket.
