Greed is greed. It applies to both material and nonmaterial
things. It seems to be with us and we seem not to be able to manage it. It is
innate put in our genes by evolution. I understand that, but we are intelligent
beings. We should be able to manage innate propensities and tendencies better that
we do. We honor such elementary thing as “first come, first served” in a line
waiting to order a pizza or in a bank. However, there are those who elbow to
the front of the line. Workers organize into a union to protect themselves from
corporate greed and from unfair labor practices yet there are those who are
lazy and do not want to work but expect the union to protect their jobs. A greedy
company owner who refuses to pay employees a living wage cannot expect worker
loyalty or the best and hardest workers. Civil rights organizations and even a
political party that organized to prevent racial discrimination, yet there are minorities
that refuse to work because their boss is afraid to fire them. This mindset of
greed even extends into the area of mythical belief; church members feel they have
the right to park in some ones yard, not pay taxes, or make hideous noises they
call music because they are “worshiping the lord”. As ridiculous as it sounds
out of the context of material greed and earthly things, most church leaders hog
the right for their members to get into heaven.
Why is it that we do not seem to be able to learn that we
hurt ourselves by greed? If a workers union has the power to demand exorbitant
wages, does not mean it is in the best interest of the workers to destroy the company.
A person who refuses to work because civil rights organizations are protecting him
or her from amoral discrimination is hurting everyone. Human greed seems to be the
root of evil but to accept the idea it is not controllable because it is in our
genes is not acceptable. If it is in your genes, it is yours. It is a high hurdle but we can get over it
because if we are to survive as a species, we must.
