ONLY GENETICISTS CAN KNOW THE ANSWER

When human behavior seems illogical, then look at the genes. As a child, my mother would refer to certain occupations as “callings”. Minister and Priests were on her list along with teachers. She always wanted to be a teacher. She was intelligent, patient, and caring but above all else, she was empathetic. She would often say that a teacher, may not earn much money but they were held in high respect by the community. After many years of first the rigid hierarchy of the military then college in a professional school, I graduated. Rather than go to a lucrative practice I went back to school to earn a PhD to become a “teacher”. I could not justify my choice. Perhaps it was a secret wish to live the life my mother wanted to live but never could.

As a professor, I talked to many other professors. Although it was nowhere near 100%, many of them often expressed the idea that money “was never an objective” in their life. When I compare myself to others politically, it would appear that liberals outnumber conservatives about 20 to one. In later life, I learned that liberals are compassionate and empathetic. They are compromising and value fairness. They share a sense of honor and self-worth, including greed with conservatives but greed is not dominant. In addition, they share a sense of hierarchy dominance but liberals put nature and the environment on top with men and women above children, but humans above animals. Although, the macho men among liberals may not like to believe it, liberals are more like nurturing women than they are like war-making men.  

I’ve gone through life but have yet to meet a man who would admit to being a wimp. Undeniably, the male population is full of male wimps, but none would say as much. In contrast, it is a rare woman who has a macho attitude, a woman willing to slug it out with another woman or even with a man, although there seem to be more brave women than there a brave men. Macho men do not like to admit it but they would fight to save themselves before they would fight to save women or children but more women will fight to save themselves and their children before they would fight to save their husbands.  The point is there seems to be two “natural orders” in biology reflecting a large series or cluster of innate traits melded into two broad and overlapping groups. One is conservative and the other is liberal. Of course, there are conservative women and liberal men. Of course, there are nurturing men and dominant women.

So let run a great experiment. Let us develop an educational system to teach small children how to read and write. We would find more female teachers especially with younger children. The wages among the work force would be less for teachers than for construction workers. Let us expand the experiment, call it the United States, and institute a system where all people can vote. Let us form a ruling political body and call it Congress. If what I wrote above about genes dominating behavior were true then the congress would have two groups, one identified as liberals and the other as conservatives. The liberal group in congress would have more women then the conservative group. Of course, this cannot be true because we have free will and do what we want to do. The answer is still pending to a question asked of a group of professors, “If you are so damn smart, why aren’t your rich?” Scientist can describe the situation but only geneticists can answer it.
