If the only columnist people read is John Podhoretz or the
only TV station they listen to is FOX, they have no idea of what the truth
might be. The vary thing that drives them to ingest that kind of information in
the first place is reinforced by what they read. They become involved in a vicious
but toughened circle of misguided logic. They begin to believe that all government
is bad, that all liberals are lazy and want to live on government handouts, that
all liberals want to take away their constitutional rights (guns) and individuality,
that we are not an immigrant nation, and that women are chattel, and that
quality of life only matters for them—Ayn Rand. Family values start with men
being the head of all households and controlling the reproductive lives of
women. The list is long but the objective is clear: in their mind, the natural
order of thing is that there is a ruling class—a male ruling class—and there is
a working class—period! As George W. Bush put it, there are the “haves and the
have nots”. What they do and how they do it does not have to make sense: they
will lie (FOX, Podhoretz), cheat (voter suppression in Republican controlled states)
and steal (Romney and vulture capitalism). The ruling class must be the ones to
make all the decisions, which of course means everything will be in their
favor. Workers are ignorant, Latino immigrants are ignorant, which must be why
they are not leaders. Slaves were ignorant, which must be why they were slaves.
This gives the full perspective of what voter suppression is about. Why should either male, but especially female
workers, have a vote when they don’t know anything; they should shut up and do
as they are told.
