MAKE GUN REGISTRATION A TOUGHER LAW

There is much talk in Washington about trying again to pass gun legislation. Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomy are prepared to “rewrite” the legislation that failed. My advice to them is to rewrite the bill and make it a lot tougher, such as include the provision for a national registry of gun owners. This may seem to be counter intuitive but it is not; make it less extensive so more senators will vote for it. The American people are upset that their bill did not pass. I as an American am upset that it didn’t pass but I was also upset that it was “milk toast” legislation. These two senators wrote the bill to please the minority of a minority: a radical sub-group of NRA members that no one can please short of complete capitulation. The majority of Americans are ready to stand up and tell this punk group of radicals and the Senators they own to go to hell. It is our country not theirs to do with as they please.

Public opinion polls have shown time after time and in state after state, gun registration is what the American people want. Like cake, most people want to have the privilege of owning a gun and shooting them too but everyone has a “right” to know who they are. You have the constitutional right of freedom of assembly, but I have a right to know if you are a member of the KKK or a neo Nazi, or a communist, or a survivalist. I may not have the right to know that you are having marital problems and threatened your spouse with a weapon, but law enforcement does have that right. I do not have the right to know if your psychiatrist says you cannot be trusted with a gun but the government should have that right. As a voter, I trust the government to do what I can’t—that is how we have chosen to organize our society.
