GRINGO GUN OWNERS IN BELIZE
There is a rather famous song “Just Another Gringo in Belize”. This fun little song references life
on the island of Ambergris Caye, especially in the little village of San Pedro.
It is about how Americans usually behave when they move to this island Paradise.
I lived inland in Belize for many years and saw certain behavioral characteristics
of American, which I thought were unique to those who fancied themselves to be
tough guys—the John Wayne types from Texas and Alaska especially; none of them was
ex police. What reminded me of this anecdote is when I heard that a rich American—a
computer virus designer—bought guns for the police in a small village in
Belize. These Americans would gravitate toward the law enforcement in one manner
or another. Often it took the form of
how they could give them “valuable” advice about how to do their jobs. It was a
given that they always assumed they know more that then police—American
arrogance. I remember one fellow who complained to me about the cold reception
he received when he offer to teach the police how to handle guns. He offered to
teach them how to shoot. He even offered to buy the ammunition so it would be
free. He shook his head in disbelief; they still refused. It was amazing they
didn’t kick his backsides out of town. I love America but am tired of being embarrassed
by some of my fellow citizens—in Belize.
