The gun control debate is often very illogical, therefore unreasonable,
which leads us to an ugly place. One of the themes of this blog sight is that
if behavior is illogical on of the first things to consider is that the behavior
is innate. For example, self protection is innate, we all have the need for
self protection but some of us do not trust the police while other do—a reasonable
debate about the trustworthiness of the police or even the army at a national level.
That is reasonable but I find the argument of self-protection shallow when used
by Federal and State Legislators.
Law making bodies control both the police and the army, they
tell them what they can do and cannot do and they do it in our behalf. However, when they pass laws that say it is
legal for people to run around the streets with both canceled and open carry
weapons, when they can purchase assault weapons with huge ammunition clips and
carry these weapons on the streets they have crossed a line. Here is my line of
logic; people can carry these weapons everywhere, the streets, political
rallies, Federal parks, liquor bars, everywhere. It is, they declare, a constitution
right. So why can I not carry a loaded assault weapon into a legislative
chamber such as the House of Representatives or in to the balcony above the
Senate Chambers? I cannot even legally suggest you that you test the law in
this regard—that would be tantamount to inciting an act of terror. Legislators
are adamant that people can carry loaded weapons of all sizes and shapes on the
streets where I live but not into the places where they work, yet, if they do
it, it is not inciting terror. Of course, I argue that it is exactly what they
are doing; Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, and Aurora. Do they assume “hot” arguments
only happen in those chambers and not on the streets? Do they assume that people on the streets are
more reasonable then they would be in legislative hearings? Does the second amendment
of the Constitution die at the door of their work places?
The answer is simple. They want deference accorded to them
as leaders. They are leaders and you are followers, their safety is more important
than your safety, they do not believe in the police protection, or they have been bought and paid for by a gun
lobby that wants to make money. Need I remind you that greed is an innate
behavior even stronger than self-preservation?
