The greatest problem the Catholic Church faces is a public
relations problem. The cover up of sexual abuse of children by priests has shaken
the very foundation of the Church, which is their Christian doctrine. I
listened to the discussion this morning on Chris Hayes concerning the election
of the new pope and one of the panel members made the statement; the Cardinals
who are to elect the new pope are the problem. They were not the pedophiles; a
small number of priest who worked for them were the criminals. If as alleged, the
problem was universal, which the wide spread failure to prosecute clearly suggests
is true, then they as Cardinals are all guilty of protecting criminals to
protect the name of the church.
The puff of white smoke from a Vatican chimney will indicate
the Cardinals have selected a new Pope who will have the job of restoring the good
faith of Church members. To do this, he will be obligated to seek out and
punish the Cardinals who were responsible. What this implies is two fold. First,
they have to find a Cardinal not involved in protecting abusive priest from
punishment to select as Pope. If all cardinals are guilty, no such candidate
exists. Second, they will elect a Cardinal to be Pope, who will have to tell
those who elected him to retire to monasteries around the world and wait for
the police to come and arrest them. Are these two hills so steep that they are
insurmountable?
