There are several things missing in campaign rhetoric. On of
the biggest is climate change, which is avoided clearly because of the fear of
politicians have, including the President, of the huge stick brandish by the
energy—this has a provable economic base. Another
perhaps more important avoided subject is the impact of the do nothing congress, which has a philosophical base. The reason this is
so important is that it relates to two fundamental things. The first is the obvious
corruption of both the Senate and the House of Representatives by their own self-imposed
rules of operation. The fact that a single congressional representative can
prevent the consideration of a duly written and submitted bill or presidential
appointment is an abomination. The second is a minority of senators or Congressional
representatives can prevent consideration of any bill they do not like by a cloture
vote requiring a super majority. This is as wrong for a Republican as it is for
a Democrat. I, as altruist, blame the fundamental individual conservative political
philosophy not to compromise as
being at the heart of the problem especially when they act collectively.
I cannot get the haunting image of George W, Bush standing behind a microphone after his ill-gotten win in 2004 saying his win
gave him political capital and he
intended to “spend it”. He arrogantly meant he did not have to compromise with
anyone for any reason—he won. He was saying the same thing Mitt Romney told his
donors: 47% of the country does not
count. In George Bush case, arguable, 50%
of the country does not count. What he was saying was equivalent to a little
League Coach tell his team “winning is everything” or for a case in point, Speaker Boehner saying we have a majority
so we will not compromise—or to be trite our
way or the highway. I cannot imagine a Democrat saying anything alike that.
Nor can I imagine why the American people do not realize that Ann Rand, the
author of the political philosophy these people follow, said 99% do not count. If you vote for Romney/Ryan you are voting against yourself.
