POLITICS, RELIGION, AND DARWIN

The oil and water of society are religion and politics; they do not mix. It took humankind centuries to figure that out, which they did when they first started the United States. The Constitution clearly makes that division. You can worship any why you want, but secular government rules. Using that criterion, several candidates for the presidency of the country have disqualified themselves. Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee are current examples, and in the past, Joe Lieberman and Jimmy Carter were clearly misfits. It is unfortunate that the power of religions is such that every candidate has to indicate he or she has religions of some sort. In the United States, it is more than a candidate believing in a God or not but is clearly one God, which is the Christian God. Can anyone imagine a candidate declaring he or she believed in Allah or saying the do not believe Jesus Christ was the son of God or something along those lines? Of course, the truth is that most of us in America do not believe in a God that rules everything as Muslims do. There are those who feel there is not such thing as a legitimately elected government; after all, no one can elect God to anything and conclude they will rule “in the name of God”, which brings us full circle back to people such as Huckabee and Santorum. The distortion is that to vote for them is to vote for God, which is clearly nonsense. Every body’s heaven is different, which means they make it up as they go along. Santorum and Huckabee, try to make us believe that there is no such thing as recreational sex. In fact, I would like to ask them to declare that they never engaged in that practice. All of these things such as sacredness of life, capital punishment, divorce, abortion, eugenics, population control, life support, treatment of terminal disease just to start the list of current political issue that have religious connotations. These real problems need solutions to which a majority of people agrees. Of course, religion will influence the mindset of some of us but as time goes on, we as a people are more and more reverting to good old Darwinian inspired survival of the fittest. I find it strange that in spite of all our sophistication, we are going back to where we started. Obviously, this is happening because we are shedding ourselves of the burden of religious leaders.
