REMEMBERING NEOCONSERVATIVES ON MEMORIAL DAY

Nothing in politics is more confusing than trying to understand what “neo-conservatism” is. The meaning of neo-conservatism is an important topic because of the creep of their message into our mainline politics, which is evident in political affairs in the United States. Just yesterday, the media gave broad coverage to Senator John McCain voiced full-throated support for their most radical beliefs. The American people had relegated “neo-conservatism” to below the centerfold and to the back rooms in Washington because of the associations of that philosophy with the foolishness of the Iraqi War. McCain’s shocking statements along with the surprisingly wide media coverage stimulated me to look at neo-conservatism again, in light of what seems to be happening across our Nation. At the end of George W. Bush’s term of office in 2009 Jonathan Clarke, who happened to be a senior fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs gave perhaps was the best definition. He said the main characteristics were: 1. A tendency to see the world in binary good/evil terms 2. Low tolerance for diplomacy 3. A readiness to use military force 4. Emphasis on US unilateral action 5. Distain for multilateral organizations 6. A focus on the Middle East Critics of the ongoing negotiations with Iran concerning atomic weapons limitation often condensed all six of these points into single statements. In the minds of the neo-cons, talking (diplomacy) will not change the fact that Israel can do no evil and Iran can do no good. We need to bomb them out of existence. We do not need or want allies in any other country to do that, in fact, they do not even mention the four other members of the multilateral organization the United Nations Security Council plus Germany. We had relegated the “neo-conservatism” to the back rooms in Washington because of the foolishness of the Iraqi War. This day is Memorial Day, which is the day we should remember those who shed their blood because of the neo-conservatism philosophy. How could McCain have the audacity to say what he is saying? What is worse is to know there are those out there that believe him. URL: firetreepub.blogspot.com Comments Invited and not moderated
