Labor unions are absolutely essential in any society and their leadership should recognize the importance of that responsibility and at accordingly. Patrick Lynch does not and the members should remove him from office.
We have an innate tendency to organize; to establish a “peck order”, which implies one or two fighting for the top spot while the rest are followers. However, followers fight to establish power over others. We recognize that groups function as individuals, which means labor unions are one of those groups while management is the other both of which have an internal organization. Of course, management includes elected government units such as city government.
A man shot two police officers while they sat in their police car in New York City. The shooter, a black man, who irrationally believed he was revenging the killing of a young black man in Ferguson, Mo. and the choking of another in New York City. A large group of people considered the two deaths to be the result of raciest based police brutality toward black people. The group claim is that two “moral groups” exist in the minds of police officers. We all know and accept there are law-abiding citizens and criminals, who we accept that the police will and should treat differently. The “new” group now loudly proclaims police operate on a principle that black people form a different “moral group” regardless of their association with criminality. It is an obvious fabrication to believe “all” police would operate in this manner; however, there clearly is evidence that some do.
The shooter of the two police officers was operating at the fringe of reason. We are often warned of the danger of this happening in so many areas of human activity; hating Muslims, hating Democrats, hating racists, hating people who believe different than you or I do. Almost immediately, the politics enters the discussion. The Police Chief stated a crazy man from Baltimore carried out the “assassination” New York City. He fully understood the impact of using a word that means political killing and pointing out that he was not from New York, as if where he was from makes a difference. Then the Police Union President steps into the spot light with over the top rhetoric; he fairly screamed, “There is blood on the hands” of the recently elected and popular Democratic New York City mayor.
I ask union members, is this where you want to be, the kind of thing you want your leaders to say? Do you, as a union member believe “all” people believe “all police officer” are acting at a high moral standard? Believing this is the same as believing all teachers are good teachers just because they are union members, or all plumbers are good plumbers because they belong to the union. Or, as it is in the case in point, the belief that all police officers act with a high moral standard because they are union members. It is the union’s responsibility to see that this is true. The headlines prove the current police union president, Patrick Lynch, is a bad leader; “Blood on Many Hands: Police union president slams + DeBlasio after cops’ killing”, or, Police union president blames protestor for murder of two New York City police officers.”
