Looking at the political landscape in Washington D.C. it
seems obvious that the House of Representatives will impeach Obama if he grants
amnesty. That is a weak and fabricated excuse. The truth is that they will impeach
him no matter what he does on that issue. Speaker Boehner’s double talk is
making an ass of him. The Republicans have definite goals they want to see made
into law but they will not do what they want, because that is wildly unpopular.
It is notable that people are demanding
they do something about an obvious need of immigration reform, yet even with a
defined problem, they still refuse to do anything. My point is that all of this
impeachment talk about immigration is nonsense to detract from what they really
want to do.
All that is taking place in Washington, especially all that
is happening within the dark inner workings of the Republican Party, seems to confuse
serious students of democracy. The lack of openness should be a warning that
they do not want the public to know their reasons, meaning this strange situation
relates to things they are not willing to discuss in polite conversation. A
large segment, not a majority, but still a large segment, of the population do
not want to admit to being opposed to a larger series of small social issues; funding
public education, gay pride, same sex marriage, feminism and women’s liberation,
racism, anti-Muslim sentiment, government spying need to prevent terrorism, rights
of United States Citizens, corporate handling of private personal information, support
of water boarding torture, closing Guantanamo, etc.
People are so ashamed at their own selfishness they will not
admit they do not want to pay to educate other people’s children. Their homophobic
bigotry for same sex marriage is palpable especially in the south and west. We repeatedly
see xenophobia express as a call to ban burkas on Facebook. Hate for having a
black man in the White House is also something people will whisper but are not
willing to talk about openly, at least in polite company. What is unusual, perhaps
a thing of our times is that political operatives have gathered these small,
often regionally intense, hate groups into one big coalition flying the Republican
banner. Unfortunately, they have collectively condensed to gain control of the
House of Representatives. It would be difficult for anyone of the people in
these different groups to say they support impeaching the president for such “politically
incorrect” things as being black, or his support of gay marriage, or whatever.
I have found that although members of this group often make
statements about how they hate Obama or hat political correctness, they are never
willing to say why. However, if they try to impeach him, they will have to
write up the charges, which will be most interesting to read. They would have
to admit they want to impeach him for doing his job well. They will never admit
to the truth, which is their collective bigotry, their real reason for wanting
that outcome.
