I saw a TV ad this morning sponsored by Organizing for
Action (OFA), which is a liberal oriented group. The ad said, “Stand up to the
Tea Party”. The more I thought about it the stranger the message seemed. Here
is a liberal group I support spending huge sum of money to buy an ad asking
opposition party to stand up to a radical group in their party; to stand up to
the people who are destroying their party. The instinctual response for liberal
would normally be to stand back and let them destroy themselves. The answer to
explain why a liberal group would spend money to air such an ad is that the OFA
did not aim it at Democrats; they aimed it at Republican. Although it was not
obvious at first, OFA was performing a public duty.

Our country has a two party system of government. Although
one side or the other decries the existence of their opposition, the truth is
that we need the opposition to thrive. It is the old hawk and dove story; one
cannot exist without the other. It is a complex story but it is a fact. Unfortunately,
the Tea Party is destroying both parties. We have a great president struggling
to run a great but deadlocked country. The
obvious intent of the Tea Party is to destroy the government. The TV program
that the ad interrupted was a parade of radicals including Marsha Blackburn, Michelle
Bachman, Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee to name a few. They know that the Affordable
Health Care Act is not going to be overturned, yet they say they will block all
government business until it is overturned. It is irrational, it is illogical, and
it makes no sense, so why are they doing it?
They know that cutting taxes is very attractive to voters. The
congressional representatives in that parade of hate mongers know that the
country spent more money then it is taking in. They know that they as congressional
representatives the purse strings of government are under their control. They
know that they have spent the money now they have to pay the bill; they know
that they cannot change the past but must look to the future. They know that shutting
down the government and a budget default would be disastrous to the nation…make
things worse. They believe their own hate the government rhetoric to the point that
they do not understand the word ‘anarchy’. As I just said, they are doing it to
destroy the government and are not smart enough to know what comes next.
They know raising taxes is difficult and cutting spending is
a difficult balance. They know these things are difficult but unlike shutting
down the Affordable Care Act, they are doable. It will take a lot of hard work and
tough votes on their part. What the OFA ad was saying it simple; America needs
the Republican Party as much as they need the Democratic Party but neither political party needs the Tea Party.
In a strange twist in politics, a liberal OFA wants to help the Republican Party
to shed them selves of the Tea party. People who donate to or otherwise support
OFA should be proud that the directors of that organization hit the target when
the use their money to make America a better place. As an aside, it makes me
wonder what it would take to make the Tea Party supporters proud.
