Bill deBlasio is going to be the next mayor of New York; at
least that seems to be the common wisdom—New York is 6 to one Democrat to Republican.
Everyone knows the reliability of common wisdom. Joe Lhota, the Republican challenger,
was a guest on Steve Kornacki’s (MSNBC) show this morning. He was impressive. He made the statement that will win him
the seat in city hall; he will cut taxes and spend more money. This is more
of the same old Republican magic that people believe, not because it is true
but because they want to believe it.
Working people have
to put themselves into the deep dark recesses of a Republican mind to
understand how Lhota can say this in such a convincing way. He can say it because
he believes it is the truth and is morally correct, which begs the question, “Just
what does he believe?”
As mayor, he will favor Wall Street. He will cut taxes on rich people and save money by cutting services on
poor people. Like Bloomberg, after the people elect him and he continues
the current policies, Lhota can look people in the eye and say New York is
doing great. What he means is that he is doing great, that is the 1% is doing
great but you can go to hell; Ayn Ryan is right, you are rabble and do not matter,
the sad part is that you must believe it too because you vote that way—at least
you have in the past.
Does anyone have to look farther than current news reports
to find that the Republicans have won? I used the past tense because it has
happened; not a process that is taking place or will take place. Wages have
gone down and money is at the top. All the money is in their hands of a few and
they are using it to keep it there; it is not and never will trickle down. All
they are doing now is refining their form of government, their plutocracy. Ronald
Reagan’s economic model destroyed the “American Dream” and the working class of
this country helped him do it. Does it matter to you that what he meant was
that he was creating his “Dream”, a country where the rich are in charge. In
his corruption of America Democracy, what he is doing is somehow creating a moral
order, a family with a GOP father and obedient wife and children. It is morally correct to beat a disobedient
wife and keep the children in their place; that is seen but not heard.
We know and cry about income disparity but you can do absolutely
nothing about it. For example, the Republicans tell the people that it is OK
that they have all the money because they are the ones who create jobs. Now ask
yourself, “Where are the jobs?” Now, tell me what you are going to do about it.
It is OK that they have the money at the top, but ask your self why you work at
a $7.25/hour job and cannot afford health insurance. Now, tell me what you are
going to do about it. Why do you have to
worry about social security disappearing, why your tax money is going to
private schools, why college tuition is $50,000 pre year, and why you cannot
get a job after graduating from college. Why do we subsidize oil companies, why
businesses can pollute the air we breath, and why can they suppress voting and
gerrymander electoral districts? Why is the congress of the Untied States at a favorability
rated at 10-12% if they are responding to the needs of the majority? They are
responding to the 1%; you do not matter. Is it OK that they are responding to
their needs not yours? Now what are you, as a good citizen, going to do about
it? Run for office, but remember the Supreme
Court decision, Citizen United, if you are not one of theirs, you to lose; Bill deBlasio, you are not one of theirs!
