The media insist Obama is starting a “war” with Syria. I don’t
know about you but for me a state of war refers to a “period” of armed conflict
between two sovereign nations or two armed factions within one nation and not
just an act of war. The attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was an act of war but it
was not he war. An act of aggression against Syria’s al Assad is not a war. It
may turn into a war but it is not a war. A drone attack in Yemen, Pakistan, Libya,
or Somalia is an act of war that may turn into a war. Drone attacks are not meant
to be dramatic or make a point; they are intended to be effective drawing as
little attention as possible.
This leaves open the question, “What would it take to have a
war between Syria or any of these other countries and the United States?” In my
mind, there is only one scenario possible that punishment for using illegal
weapons in the form of a missile strike could lead us into the nastiness of war and that would be if we landed
troops in those countries making it a war. Israel could have a war with Syria over
a common boarder. They, like is the case between North and South Korea, have massive
amounts of firepower pointed at one another, which is a deterrent for war. Basher
al Assad more than likely would not want that to happen while he is in a desperate
contest fighting to survive in his own country. The prediction is that he will stop
the gassings but do nothing in retaliation against the United States until he
wins or is in the same situation that Hitler found himself in that Berlin
bunker.
If there is a missile strike, forever after, so that George W.
Bush doesn’t look so bad the Republicans will insist that Obama started an
unfunded “war”. To disgorge their
revulsion for violence, progressive critics will insist that Obama started and
unjust “war”. Of course, some people such
as Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum who wanted to be president will insist we
should, “praise the load and pass the ammunition” so we can remain free of Sheira Law. That is the kind of thing these
people warn us is looming over our United States court system; at least it
was until North Carolina passed thier pitifully stupid law making Sharia Law
illegal. These folks are in a fight to protect their blind Christian faith against
what they see as the evils of blind Islamic faith. When we think of what might have
been, presidential elections can sometimes give some of us nervous breakdowns.
Those of us who see a missile strike as a punishing act aggression,
corporal punishment equivalent to a spanking, will see a missile strike as a
successful event and another reason to see Obama as a decisive and successful
president.
