Breaking News: “A Florida jury of six found Trayvon Martin guilty.” I heard
someone make this statement on a television news program as part of the post
verdict discussions. This succinct summary of the recent trail seems to have
captured my sentiments. Something was wrong with the way authorities, attorneys,
and the news media was handling the entire affair. None of the above seemed to be smart enough to
ask the right question. The mishandling had to do with the question that was
asked; did George Martin shoot Trayvon to death in self-defense, which shifted
the guilt on to Trayvon. The real question
should have been, “What crime did Trayvon commit?” What did Trayvon do that justified his being killed? Clearly, the answer was walking down the
street while black. It is not a crime to be black and it is not a crime to walk
down the street.
Change the scene a bit and put a well-trained police officer
and not a want-to-be cop in that situation. Of course, the police officer would
have stand trail for provoking and killing an innocent person. In other words, Trayvon martin was not the criminal but he
was on trial.
