BENGHAZI HEARINGS CLEARLY A WITCH-HUNT

Darrell Issa is caught in a lie in front of a National Audience. Issa is chair of the House of Representatives Government Oversight and Reform Committee.  He is a Republican and is out-and-out liar. That committee is hold hearings on Benghazi. He was a guest on Meet the Press along with Ambassador Thomas Pickering. Although I am not a fan of this man, I have to give him credit for putting Darrell Issa straight. He said Pickering refused to testify in the Benghazi hearings. With some fanfare, Pickering explained that Issa refused to honor his request to testify. He lied. That offer was make public so everyone knew who was telling the truth. Issa, hiding being delegated authority, lamely said he did not deny Pickering’s request.

Pickering was co-chair of the Benghazi Accountability Review Board with Admiral Mike Mullen and submitted a report that Issa did not even read. In fact, at first he even denied that he has seen the classified report.  Pickering corrected him on that as well. Clearly, the Issa hearings are a witch-hunt with one objective in mind; to burn Hilary Clinton at stake.

  1. The term "witch hunt" brings back memories of the President Clinton impeachment. The Republicans were looking for any excuse to smear Clinton and Whitewater looked like a good candidate. When that didn't pan out, the Lewinski indiscretion was unearthed and they rode that horse all the way to his impeachment. That, despite the fact that no one was injured and the activity was between consenting adults. A serious breach of marital misconduct to be sure but it certainly didn't rise to the level of "Treason, Bribery or other High Crimes or Misdemeanors." His detractors were looking for any reason to impeach and they found it in this relatively trivial indiscretion

Now, fast forward to the current Benghazi witch hunt. The two people that the extreme right wing Republicans (which currently may be a majority of their party) most fear, and perhaps even hate, are President Obama and Hillary Clinton. They see Hillary as their opponent in the 2016 presidential election and anything they can do to sully her reputation helps their candidate's chances of victory. That's one of the major goals of the investigation. I predict they will find others before 2016 rolls around.

As for how it affects President Obama, consider this. If they can dig up enough dirt on him on enough issues, no matter how trivial, and with a majority of right wingers in the House, it requires only a majority vote to bring impeachment proceedings. A far fetched conspiracy theory to be sure, but then the impeachment of President Clinton was pretty far fetched. As with Clinton, Obama would be acquitted by the Senate but would forever suffer the stain of Impeachment. I believe the right wing nuts are so pathological in their hatred of Obama and the Clintons that they aren't above such an action. They would dearly love to crow about impeaching the last two Democratic presidents.
