However, Syria is in conflict and one again religion is at
the center of war talk, which makes the task difficult. The idea that the Arab
spring centers around democracy verses caliphate, monarchies, or other forms of
dictatorships is becoming lost in the struggle of one Muslim sect trying to
dominate another. An identifiable number of groups engaged in the conflict,
which except for a small group of Christians, are all Muslims. This fact makes
it difficult to understand the position of some of our Congressional Representatives.
They seem to have a deep abiding hate for Muslims yet they are busy urging the
President to take military action in Syria to save Muslim lives. Are we to
judge that they love war more than they hate Muslims? Their position doesn’t really
make much sense unless you reduce their argument to the idea that they really
want to kill non Christians no matter what their political beliefs are. In this
view, Graham and McCain want to look like tough guys and defenders of liberty but
end up looking like aimless stupid because their positions do not make any
sense.
As an army officer, in Iraq, a former Republican Congressman
from Florida hated the Muslim prisoners he was interrogating so much that he
was more concerned with hurting them because they were Muslims then he was in
finding out if they were enemy combatants. The same attitude was expressed certain
interrogators working in Guantanamo. During
the debate over Dick Cheney and water boarding, one congressional
representative said that torture was OK because even if they didn’t know
anything they deserved to be tortured. Could
this possible the basis these people want for our foreign policy?
The Republicans, which means they are for promoting or maintaining
a U.S. lead hegemony, have an additional agenda. This is what they are referring
to when they say they want when they use the cutesy phrase; they want Obama
stop “leading from behind”. They want monopolistic power in the business world
in Syria. Obama seems to want fair and honest business interest to win out; the
business that offers the best deal for the natural resources and markets wins
and America can easily win at that foreign trade game. It is not hard to
understand why American business can win the market battle.
Then of course, there is Israel. They do not want a hostile Lebanon-Syria-Jordan-Egypt
on their boarder. That too is not hard to understand. However, what is hard to
understand is how Christian right wing religious hate can join love of war to
the point where it dominates peaceful business and Jewish state interests. If
something is so illogical that it does not make sense, it is time to look at
ones genes. Do we want to be at the top of the human peck order so badly that we
are willing to kill massive number of people for killing massive numbers of people?
It sounds stupid to me. I would rather seek a peaceful solution—my message to
Obama is go for it your way.
