A friend, old navy buddy Bobster, sent this message to me. Because of the sentiment expressed, I thought it deserved publication on Firetreepub.
I just read this interesting article about the low levels of inequality in Singapore and the Nordic countries.
Well worth reading but it left me with a sense of frustration that we in the US will ever be able to solve our problem without major political changes. With the makeup of our current Congress and the ever present threat of the filibuster in the Senate can any major change ever be accomplished?
One bright spot is what Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York is considering in gun control. His personal fortune is 30+ billion and he has taken aim at the NRA by threatening to provide substantive support to any candidate, Republican or Democrat, who will support background checks on ALL gun purchasers and the outlawing of private ownership of large magazine automatic weapons. Although Bloomberg is nominally a Republican, he’s considered a RINO (Republican in name only) by his party. It’s my belief (hope) that he will expand his support to include funding those Republicans who oppose tea party candidates and other extremists, thus removing the fear that the more moderate Republicans have of losing their seat by not hewing to the demands of the extreme right wing of the party. One can dream
