SOCIAL BALANCE IN JEOPARDY

The reason we live in the best country in the world is that we have the best government in the world. The reason we have the best government in the world is that we have learned to live in a whole host of rationally arrived at equilibriums.  We have learned to live in an economic balance, a social-capitalist system. We have a government that balances freedom with regulations; that balances selfishness with altruism; and that does for us all the things we cannot do for ourselves. Most but not all of us know we have to pay high taxes to afford to live like children in a rich family. We also know that freedom is like money; it is best to know we have it but also best that if we spend it foolishly we can lose it.

Most of us know these things but some of us, because we are guided by innate drives, make harmful decisions that upset the most contentious and hard to arrive at balance, which is between selfishness and altruism. Unfortunately, there are those in congress who want to upset that balance. The current argument about the “sequester” is a case in point. Are we on the verge of creating a devastating social imbalance? The danger is there but I think, as a country, we will come back in balance because we must.
