The reason I do not like Ronald Reagan is not the same
reason Republicans do not like Obama. Both these presidents were effective in
convincing people that their diametrically opposed beliefs were the correct
ones to follow in governing; that is true and is reason enough for opposite
party members not to like them. However, I can point to a large number of
things Reagan was involved in that were underhanded and some that were down
right illegal: diversion of money to arm the contras, negotiating for release
of hostages to prevent reelection of Carter, and collecting million dollar
bribes from Japan, to name a few. I
cannot find one thing Obama has done that is even questionably outside the law—not
one.
Of course, I am talking about individual character and not
political party; although I do see a crude party correlation, it is not without
exceptions either way. Eisenhower for example is guilty of an extramarital
affair and JFK with multiple affairs; morally wrong but no one died because of
them.
In terms of character faults, I could mention Nixon, and
George W. Bush in whom I find similar behavior patterns. Obama is following in
JFK and Clinton in character. I know everyone will point out Monica Lewinski,
and JFK’s wanderlust but again extramarital sex is hardly equivalent to swaying
a presidential elections or violating congressionally mandated law. White Water was a land development deal trumped
up by a Richard Mellon Scaife and was not equivalent to killing thousands of
people in Central America or to starting wars in which over 4000 American
soldiers are killed and burglarizing opposition party headquarters. For Obama, attending
a black church with an angry minister does not merit equivalency to the crimes
of his predecessors.
