Fifteen senators have signed a letter originating with Sen. John
Cornyn of Texas, Senate minority leader. The letter asked Obama to withdraw
Hagel’s nomination for Secretary of defense. Stop and think about the purpose
this late stage request. Obviously, the President will not honor the request. All
observers will know this, so Cornyn and his 15 fellow signatures must know this
as well. These Senators are all Republican Senators, which means they are
citizens of the United States; therefore, we can assume they do not want to
hurt the America. This leaves us with the alternative, which is that they think they are helping their country
or are incompetent.
We can seriously question this as a motive because the letter
clearly tells the entire world, the stage on which the Secretary of Defense operates
that he does not have the full support of the Senate. Unfortunately, I believe their
motive is that they do not want to weaken their country but want to hurt Obama—the
divide the President from the people and then conquer the people. This is a gross
miscalculation perhaps based the attitude found in a small town hall meeting of
extreme right wing Cornyn followers in rural Texas—not exactly a window to the
world. In contrast to a small group of people in a church basement. President
Obama is extremely popular not only in the United States but around the world. The
Republican Party is a growing
minority, the problem for them is the way they are growing; they are growing smaller and smaller
because of poorly conceived actions like this. The result will be that everyone
will see these 15 senators for what they are; incompetent and not worthy of the
office they hold, which is another way of saying they are radical Republicans.
