Gov. Jindal caught the public eye by through use of the word ‘stupid’; a word not often used by politicians when they are talking about their own party. At the same time, he called on his fellow party members not to abandon their conservative principles. Doesn’t he realize these two things are not mutually exclusive? If you adhere to Republican Party principles, you are acting stupid. Here is my reasoning for saying that.
The objective of a party organization is to elect candidates who will adhere to the party line or in political talk the “Party Platform”. When the party platform appeals to a minority of voters, it is a losing proposition. In spite of the fact that we have a democracy based on republicanism—one man one vote, the fundamental Republican Party philosophy centers on selfishness, which is egocentric, which is the opposite of the caring altruism of democracy. Look at the principles the Party stands on: taxes; it is my money and I want to keep it; the stand on immigration, it is my country and I do not want to share the bounty of this great nation; welfare and foreign aid, I do not want to support someone who can not take care of him or her self. Let them earn their own keep or suffer the consequences; or the Ayn Rand stance, which is that you are either a maker or a taker, famously, you either make money (the 1%) or you do not count (the 47%). There is no end to the ideas that show selfishness is a virtue. I have news for the Republicans, the majority of American see greed as being egregious.
Pres. George W. Bush tried what Gov. Jindal proposed with his ill-conceived “compassionate conservative” rhetoric. It was an oxymoron and everyone knew it. What Jindal seems to be hoping for is that Republicans can cover up what they really want until they are elected and then hold on to power by counting on the newly elected people to distort the laws to favor their minority. You do not believe this? Have you ever heard of voter suppression? Have you ever heard of gerrymandering? Have you ever heard of redistricting? Have you ever heard of corrupting the Electoral College? Have you ever heard of Citizen United? Have you learned the lessons of Wisconsin and North Carolina and 22 other states? Gov. Jindal is calling on his party not to be stupid; what he is really saying is that the smart thing to do is to lie.
