A person can set up a type font, page layout, and background color then when they do not like the result, they press the default button. Doing that brings them back to where they started. I look at the fiscal cliff negotiations the same way. When I press the default button it brings me back to where Washington stands politically and not financially. One of the things I have emphasized in my blogging is to describe the political divide between Republicans and Democrats at the most fundamental level. The argument over the so-called fiscal cliff makes my point. No true Democrat can agree with Boehner’s proposal and no true Republican can agree with Obama’s proposal.
Republicans establish their political philosophy on the right of rule by the privileged. In contrast, Democrats establish their party philosophy on egalitarian or classless rule. These politics have an ancient historic thread. Our founding fathers based the America revolution on throwing off rule by a monarch—the privileged. Check out the recent voter suppression of the 2012 election, which is a throw back to considering 3/5 compromise over representation of southern states. Look at conservative states where to vote you had to be a property owner, had to be educated (read & write), or had to pay a poll tax. Compare this to state where to vote all you had to do was show up at the polling place. All of this relates to the privileged ruling over the poor class. Now look at the fiscal cliff negotiation; the argument is clear, those who consider themselves the privileged class do not want to pay taxes and do not want any tax money spent in support of the underprivileged. Think of how ludicrous the Boehner position is. He pressed the default button. He is saying we want all the people to pay sales and income taxes but we do not want that money spent on the people who are paying the taxes. In a sense, he wants to undo the American Revolution and put us to default control by the elite. I understand that he is a conservative and does not want things to change but isn't this a little extreme? I cannot understand how any middle class individual in modern America would vote Republican but on the other hand I could not understand how any rich person would vote Democratic.
