NRA MEMBERS, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE

It is about time that society makes people step forward and accept responsibility for what they do. I have blogged about this approach in a political format.  Now I suggest we as a society use the same approach for gun control. George W Bush trashed the economy. He was the proximate cause but the ultimate cause was the people who voted him into office—twice. Ask your friends and neighbors if they voted for him and they say not or remain silent. Now, ask them about NRA membership. Interestingly, Rachael Maddow gave the results of a survey in which 74% of NRA members agreed there should be background checks. The leaders of that organization use membership dues and donations to mount an intense lobbying effort to prevent that from happening.

The point of this blog is that the NRA members are responsible for what their leadership does.  If you are a member, step forward and accept responsibility for the massacres. It is too late to say, “Sorry it wasn’t me”. That membership card in your wallet says it was you!  Your response could be to give up your NRA membership or to change leadership. Wayne LaPierre is using you to fulfill his radical right wing agenda. As for what the public should do, there is something referred to as “moralistic punishment”.  Membership in the NRA is bad because that organization is responsible for firearms in the hands of people that we should not allow near a gun. Tell them they are responsible for assault weapons on the street, huge clips of automatic weapon, and on and on because they are. They are responsible for what LaPierre does.  Punish every NRA member for his or her lack of morality. Tell them that as a member of that organization they should not be allowed to members of civil society: by not allowing them to be members of your social cubs, by not talking to them, by doing what I am doing with this blog, which is putting the responsibility for mass killings where it belongs, in their hands.
