John McCain said Dr. Susan Rice too dumb to be secretary of State. How could he possible get by saying such an obvious lie? He gets by with it because people respect him as a “hero”. This Susan Rice thing proves to me that he has milked his “hero cow” dry. In my mind, he is no longer a hero the American people are proud of but some one who brings shame on America.
John McCain was at one time a true Vietnam War hero. One of the most common characteristics of hero has been a certain amount of humbleness saying things such as “I am not a real hero. The people I was with are the real heroes”. They usually seem to shy from using their notoriety for personal gain. Among politicians, they use heroism if they have any, to gain votes but even then, a heroic act is not the centerpiece of their political persona. Look at John Carey and Bob Dole, for example; how many people can tell you what their heroic acts were. Compare that to John McCain. If people recognized his name, they will tell you he was a war hero even if they have no idea he is a Senator.
