At first I did not believe what Molly Ball, writer for the
Atlantic, said this morning on Steve Kornacki’s MSNBC program UP when she said
that compacting liberals into one district makes it hard to elect candidates
state wide; it should be a two way street. However, she is right. Republicans
can pack liberal into city districts where they can elect a few delegates but
that leaves most of the rest of the state the rural voters to them. A quick
look at the red blue map shows that the rural districts are conservative. By
packing conservatives into a small city district, thus concede the greatest
number of voters of city districts to liberals, it still gives the numerical majority
of statewide districts, without having the statewide majority of votes, to
conservatives. Thus, they have stumbled on to a clever two-fold scheme to
control state governments and state federal delegations with a minority of
voters.
MSNBC talking head Rachel Maddow used this logic; she had
the data, to explain how redistricting can help conservatives control the House
of Representatives. I checked and she is right. Now the Supreme Court has
allowed even more redistricting; thus, making the situation worse. If someone
cares to crunch the numbers, this may tilt the Senate, into the hands of the
republicans. Of course, senators are statewide office holders especially along
with suppression of minority votes. I was upset over this radical courts ruling
because of the civil rights implication. However,
it wasn’t until my angst subsided that I realize what great new harm they have
done to representative government (the Senate) as well—a double blow: one blow
to civil rights the second to our constitution. I keep saying on this blog
spot that the conservatives are winning because they are. The courts did this
by taking the vote out of the hands of the people and giving it to the
Republican Party. The conservative dictatorial government is falling into place
with the state legislatures and governorships, the federal House of
Representatives, the federal Senate, the majority of the federal judicial
districts, and Supreme Court. The snowball is rolling down hill and may be too
big to stop.
You are so cool! I don't believe I've truly read something like that before.
